| Customer Reviews: Great place to begin November 2, 2008 Charles Sigler (Benjamin, UT) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
There is a lot more work to Hobby Farming than the one would think. This book gives you an idea of what is involved. It causes one to think, what else can I be doing with my hobby farm, from raising and caring for livestock, to gardening and preserving the harvest. The concept of taking the byproducts and reinvesting them back into the farm to promote sustainability is something we should all be more into. Even if you are not a Hobby Farmer, there are hints and tips here that are appropiate for any landowner.
Good for Fiber Farming May 2, 2009 BekahKnits (Utah USA) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this because I was interested in farming for fiber. The author helps give you an idea of what is involved.
The book talks a little about food farming, but mostly about animals.
I liked that the author talked about things like how much acerage might be needed, basic laws, and things like why a rain barrel is important. The author also discussed how the new housing development down the road is a problem and causes stress to the animals, and how new neighbors from the city complain about animal noise and smell (happening in my own rural town right now.)
The author also discusses types and relative cost of barnes, shelters, feed, etc.
If you are interested in fiber farming I recommend Shear Spirit for tales from experienced farmers which really opened my eyes to the hard labor, long hours, and cost of farming.
All in all I learned that there really isn't much money to be made in farming unless you can do pretty much EVERYTHING on your own. If you want to keep chickens and grow veggies, this book can help you get started.
Hobby farming for Dummies September 29, 2008 Shirley A. Devany (Port Angeles, WA) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Excellent overview of the subject. It leads me to a more indepth study of the subject. I may find it towards the end in the bibliography. I am 90% of the way through the book.
Hobby Farming For Dummies April 8, 2009 Bread Maker (Utah) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is useful for people who are thinking about starting a farm.
Whether it's a large farm or small farm, it helps one decide why they want
to move to the country and if they realize all the work it will take.
It is informational.
Too generalized February 11, 2010 Catherine Delahunt (VA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found this book to be too generalized to be very helpful. I'll be donating it away. I found Barnyard in Your Backyard to be much more specific and detailed -- that's the one I'll keep for reference. I was disappointed by this book.
